About Us

Our Mission and Purpose


Caritas Social Action Network (CSAN), whose foundation is in the RC Church, exists for the relief of poverty in all its manifestations in England and Wales. It promotes social justice and its members and partners:              

  • work with people of all faiths or none
  • offer services and support with a priority for vulnerable and marginalised people
  • work in the field of social action in the context of community development

 CSAN is a member of Caritas Europa and an agency of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales

 CSAN aims to support its members and partners through the following:

  • Networking & Collaboration:

To maintain and develop a network of Catholic charities, Diocesan agencies and groups, and other like-minded organisations whose work in based on Catholic Social Teaching so as to enable partnership and fraternity. 

  • Enhance Professionalism:

To develop an infrastructure role so as better to enhance the professionalism, sustainability, excellence, reputation and impact of members.

  • Advocacy and Policy:

To advocate on behalf of the poor and marginalised within the Catholic community and in society at large, informed by the experience and services of its members.

  • Research & Reflection:

To engage in theological reflection and commission social research in order to

    • assist our members to reflect on and engage with the teachings of the Church and how it is put in practice in our members work.
    • both respect and influence Catholic Social Teaching through members’ work
    • inform the voice of CSAN in the public forum
